What is your favorite thing about Alfred University?
The first word that comes to mind when I think about AU is "home". I grew up in Alfred & some of my fondest childhood memories were the opportunities I had on AU's campus: dance concerts in Harder Hall, summer carillon concerts on the lawn & playing in the Canacadea Creek. When I started my college search, I was determined to go somewhere else, to try something new, but something kept drawing me back to Alfred and it was the best choice I ever made! I had no idea how much my idea of home would grow as an Alfred University student. As an average student in high school, Alfred's small classes and nurturing faculty were a tremendous comfort and support to me. I was challenged academically and became a more confident individual as a result. I grew just as much out of class as well. The friends I lived with in Cannon Hall my first year on campus are still some of my closest friends today. AU's small campus allowed us to find one another and become an extended family during our 4 years here. We had a ton of fun, we argued at times, but most of all we supported and cared for one another- just like family. AU has always been the perfect fit for me and I hope it proves to be the perfect fit for you, too!
BS: Clinical Psychology, Alfred University
Having grown up in the next town over, I have lived in the Alfred area my entire life. To me, Alfred would best be described as eclectic, due to our vast course offerings, our diverse student life, and our world-renowned faculty. Alfred University strives to make the best in people and encourages individuals to stand out and become inspirational! All of the above is what makes Alfred a warm and inviting place to call home. Come check out our beautiful campus and see for yourself how AU can inspire you!

What makes Alfred University distinctive?
Alfred University is the second oldest co-educational university/college in the U.S. and the oldest to always educate men and women in the same lecture room. It is one of the earliest nineteenth century colleges to have enrolled African American and Native American students. We are a small institution but have always valued and promoted diversity. Growing up the daughter, now an alumnae, of an Alfred University professor, I had the delightful experience of always having my father's students from all over the country and world at our dinner table. Synergy erupts when people from different perspectives share their ideas!

What drew you to Alfred University?
There is a spirit at Alfred University that is almost impossible to describe --- it is something you have to feel and experience. When I arrived for graduate school, the community around me encouraged and pushed me to look at the world in a new way. People here didn't have to fit a mold. Diversity was everywhere and it was celebrated. AU affects us all in different ways but after being here for almost 30 years, I still feel the warmth of the community, enjoy celebrating the diversity and basking in the beautiful environment that surrounds us and encourages us to become more than we might have ever thought. The spirit of Alfred University can be life changing-come and find it out for yourself!

What do you love most about Alfred University?
What I love most about Alfred University are the people. Having grown up in New York City and later moving to Long Island, where it is possible to be anonymous, I love the fact that in Alfred generations of families know and care about one another. Being part of Alfred University makes you a part of the family as well. I meet Alfred alums all over the geographic area that I travel in who love talking about their experiences, continued friendships and what they've done since graduation. Some come back for Alumni Weekends on a regular basis many years after graduation. There is something Alfred University and the community that remains a part of you.
B.F.A: Fine Arts, Alfred University School of Art & Design
Alfred University is a community that is pulsating with creativity and a passion for academia. Alfred is unlike any other. As a student, you are supported and challenged not only by your colleagues but also by the outstanding team of professors, coaches, and educators. At Alfred University, you are not just a number; you are a vital member of our campus. Every day at Alfred University is a gift, and I am continually astounded by and grateful for the resources and the people that comprise the University.
I am often asked as an alumna and now as an Admissions Counselor why I chose Alfred University, and I always respond with: where else would I go? There is nowhere else that compares. The interdisciplinary program and facilities within the School of Art & Design allow students to do it all. In one day, you can pour iron, blow glass, develop film, design your own digital creation, make paper, bend neon, paint, draw, and so much more. The possibilities are endless, and the professors and facilities are so accommodating to each student's individual needs. The community and relationships that are formed at Alfred University span far beyond your time at Alfred. Once a Saxon, always a Saxon!

I love the challenging and supportive learning environment here at Alfred University. As a recent alumnus I appreciated how the people in the Alfred community rally behind the students and give them countless opportunities to grow as a professional as well as an individual. I can say with confidence that we hold true to our motto here at AU (Individuals Inspired).

What drew you to Alfred University?
When I was looking at colleges, I knew I wanted to find someplace where when you walked across campus, someone would know you and wave or stop to say hi. Anyone who has walked across Alfred's campus will tell you - I came to the right place! I also love the incredible versatility of the opportunities here - you don't have to be a music minor to be first chair in the clarinet section - you don't have to be a theatre major to have the lead role. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to give everything a try.
B.A: History/Communications studies, Alfred University
What do you like most about Alfred University?
What I like most about Alfred University is how you're not just another individual; you're part of something greater. From faculty and staff to Alumni and classmates, the connections you make at Alfred University will last a lifetime. At Alfred University you're not just a student until you graduate, you're part of a family that will always be there for you.
B.F.A. & B.A: Art History & Theory, Alfred University
When I began my college search as a student, I knew I was looking for more than just a school. I was looking for friends and community, support and wisdom, art and music and all the quirks! In a nutshell, I was looking for a place that felt like home, and Alfred University was and still is all of these. During my five years of undergrad at AU I was not only trained as an artist and art historian, I also developed as a creative individual in all aspects of my life! I learned to think, question, and challenge myself, to seek out opportunities and to live as a member of a small but incredibly dynamic community. Now as a part of the Admissions team, I cannot wait to bring this experience to future Alfredians!
My advice to new students would be to remember that your education and your experiences are the only things you get to carry with you wherever you go in life, and Alfred University will prepare you with an outstanding collection of both!
