Kathi is your admissions counselor if you are from the state of Connecticut or any of the following counties of New York State: Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Dutchess, Essex, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Ulster, Warren, Washington and Westchester.
“I was going to teach frogs how to sing.” Kathi can often be heard telling prospective students this was her intention when finishing a double major in music and biology at Skidmore College (remember the WB Frog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkfU1JqmkHM ). However, as a work study student and tour guide while at Skidmore, she fell in love with college admissions. This passion led her to Alfred University where she completed a Master’s of Education in College Student Development. During that time, she was a resident director and an intern in admissions and residence life. When her degree was completed, she was offered a position in the Admissions Office and she began an almost 30 year professional career as a Saxon.
Originally from upstate New York, she now resides in the Hudson Valley as a regional admissions counselor where she lives with her husband, Bruce and two border collies, Jo and Samwise. Alfred University is a major part of the Torrey family---of the five Torrey children, three have degrees from AU and the youngest, Emma, is a current student. You might actually get to meet Emma when you come to campus and take a tour as she, too, works in the Admissions Office as a student worker and campus guide.
Favorite free time activities include spending time with her family, cooking, singing and accompanying her husband on the autoharp while he plays the banjo. She also enjoys hiking in the Adirondack Mountains (she has completed more than 12 of the 46 High Peaks), and visiting National Parks in the US (she has made it to 18 so far) as well as Provincial and National Parks in Canada.
“Alfred University is near and dear to our family. AU is a place that can change your life if you embrace all that it offers. You are not required to fit a mold but rather explore who you are and what you believe as you tackle new adventures and meet all kinds of people in a supportive community. AU has been transformative for me and our kids and I believe in the opportunities it holds to inspire.” Kathi wants you to visit for yourself and learn what it can mean to be a part of Saxon Nation!
